Roadracers (1994) (Blu-ray/DVD review)

Roadracers (1994)
Director: Robert Rodriguez
Where to get it: Echo Bridge

Acclaimed director Robert Rodriguez delivers more action-packed thrills with Roadracers, the story of a rockin' rebel named Dude (David Arquette), racing through life with a fast car, a loud guitar, a sexy girlfriend (Salma Hayek) and a big mouth. But when a confrontation ends with deadly threats, Dude finds himself speeding head-on toward a showdown that will settle the score for good. With hot stars and an energetic style all its own, Roadracers is fast-paced entertainment that never slows down.

Roadracers is a throwback of a film, but it's also a very fun and action packed film. Anyone who loves films by Robert Rodriguez will find that this lesser known film of his (originally intended for an HBO series) packs the same thrills and punches that any other Rodriquez film is known for packing. Set back in the days of greasers and James Dean wannabes, Roadracers is a little cheesy at times, but also packs some fun to go along with the great acting ( Salma Hayek, John Hawkes, ect) and excitement. Now it does take a bit for David Arquette in the leading role of the town bad ass, Dude, to settle in for you as a viewer. If you're like me, you've always seen him playing the goof ball and comedy relief of a film. But once he wins you over, it's all the better as far as this film goes.

Now the film was shot really quick. It packs tons of quick cuts and looks to have been a much more expensive film than it actually was. It also looks great on any format DVD or Blu-ray. Perhaps if one was to nitpick just a little with this one, you could say the film's main resolution does seem to lack a bit. A little too easy of a finish if you know what I mean. It does leave you wanting a little more than you get, but perhaps that was even the director's intent, I don't really know for sure. But if you're look for a fun ride, Roadracers may just be the film for you to check out. It's for sure a must watch for any fans of Robert Rodriguez.

  1. I saw this one when it was first released all those years ago, I remember liking it. This was when Rodriguez was just getting started in his career, just before Desperado...but after El Mariachi, I guess he was getting his juices flowing as a director when he made made this one, his first real taste of making a film after his own El Mariachi.
